Up on the ladder [Jan. 22nd, 2009|12:12 pm]

[music |GTA4 theme stuck in my head, AGAIN.]

I've sent all my festival applications away...now it's just a matter of time before I get the inevitable rejection letters. :P

On the other hand, I've picked up another job at the Court - which is actually kinda scary-big, this time. I'm gonna be doing A/V and sound design for THE GREAT GATSBY, which is being put on for the Christchurch Arts Festival in Court One this July. This is quite a big deal...a lot of pressure but should be heaps of fun. Ross is directing too, which is cool. And I get a free pass to the CAF as well. It's lucky I'm being told about this early, so I can plan my shooting schedule for my OWN film around it.

Speaking of which...

Ah, LiveJournal. It's been a while.

You might well ask what I've been up to all these weeks (or is it months now?). Well, I'll tell you - in order of how much weight I give them at this particular moment in history:

1. Nearing three months with Lucy, which is (rather unimpressively, but nonetheless still awesomely) a record for both of us. We're both just ludicrously happy with each other, and all is well. Went away for a couple days last week (to Le Bons Bay out past Akaroa), which was very nice. And yeah, it's just great. I don't know how we're gonna handle her going away for 10 weeks next month. And apologies for all those who I have spurned of late in favour of hangin' with m'girl. Dave, for example, has just had to come to accept that he is just no longer the prettiest person in my life.

2. I made a film. Enjoy (many have).

3. I designed the audio-visual components to the Court's production of KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN, now playing in Court One. This meant that a) I got paid film work (w00t!); b) I got my picture on the wall of fame and a page in the programme (w00t!); and c) I will be working on at least three shows next year (double w00t!). Got into a good relationship with a buncha people around the Court, and even shot an audition video for the director Geraldine Brophy, which landed her a role in Sam Raimi's new TV series LEGEND OF THE SEEKER (based on Terry Goodkind's SWORD OF TRUTH series, of which I was a fan as a kid).

4. I performed in (and sort of co-produced) 3some (performing in Dave's play). It was a good 3some, with some cool scripts and cool performances, and reasonably well-attended.

5. I stepped down as Dramasoc president, succeeded by the very capable Emma Cusdin. We're planning stuff for next year, and looking for Orientation proposals currently (to be followed up by a Term One 3some).

6. I won the Madcap for Best Actor (for the Iago thing). Hells yeah (though the Madcaps were a total fiasco this year).

7. Have gotten thoroughly sick of the Science Play - partially due to the incompetent douchebag who was in the last run of it, partially just because I've done dozens of shows of the damn things and it's kinda losing its touch. However, I will still be doing it next month - I'll have to make money somehow.

8. Enrolled for summer school...doing a scriptwriting course. Yeah.

9. I have pretty much decided I'll be voting Green this election. Got a problem with that? I don't give a shit.

10. I have been, as a result of all these things, very tired a lot. I currently am in this state. So I shall...sleep.

[music |The Hairy Nobs - Every Blink]

Went to see Courting Temptation last night. It was vurry vurry good! Very funny, and you have to think to get it - [info]mattmatt expressed joy at the fact that the audience did, in fact, get it. A couple of line flubs didn't detract from it - it was funny and, in parts, kinda touching. I urge everyone who hasn't seen it to go, NOW.

Hame and I got a lift with Matt afterwards; it is strange to be in someone's car where the driver is playing one of your songs on the stereo and singing along to it. Still, it's good to have a fan. At our destination, I sang Do You Want To with Hamish, Paint It Black by myself, and the Time Warp with Geraldine (which was just awesome).

I have borrowed Hamish's bass guitar to record the basslines for the new songs and score stuff. It's pretty cool though GOD DAMN it was out of tune! The recording is going well and is pretty much finished on the song that I'm claiming is playing right now.

I've written a screenplay (which is being edited, by me, right now) for my new short film. It looks as though I have [info]alcondo on board, and [info]toddson maybe. Unfortunately, he is looking to be unavailable now (bastard Fudge Cottage is to blame, I'm assuming). The script is kinda amusing, I guess. Should be fun to shoot.

[music |The Divine Comedy - The Frog Princess]

Third night: best night yet. I don't know whether it was because of the highly responsive audience, or our excitement backstage, or just through sheer force of acting skill, but something was better tonight. [info]wibblepuppy complimented [info]amphibious_one and me on our post-shooting scene. Everyone with me now? Awwwww.

Slide test: went OK. There was only one slide that I didn't know the artist of (it was Carl Andre's Equivalents I-VIII).

Irritating questions. Graak.

Oh, em, gee, I got an official warning from my boss at work today, for not giving enough notice about not being able to go to work (this was on Saturday, when we had tech rehearsal, and I only called up the day before). It was a verbal warning, but she said that she has to write a letter saying that she's given me this verbal warning...so is it a written warning? Eh.

Film idea is coming a-long. I've got the bones of a story worked out, except for an ending, for which I'm kinda stuck. But urghhh I hope I can get actors.

[music |IMMERSE YOUR SOUL IN LOVE]

First day of uni today. This week, we're just coming up with ideas, while watching a bunch of movies and talking about them. Next week we're scripting, week after that, SHOOTING. John Chrizzletoffels badmouthed James Cameron and Terry Gilliam...for which he shall not soon be forgiven. Tomorrow we have to bring in a movie and talk about why we like it. I guess I'll have a look and see what I can find. Suggestions welcome, though I suspect The Princess Bride will probably be the One. I also called the Pap Tav...no spaces available for next week. ;_; However, I am in for October.

Oh yeah - we had this, like, play thing tonight. You know - The Writer's Quest for More Than a Middle. At Hagley. At 7.30 pm. And it runs til Friday.

Went pretty well.

Backstage antics were less antic. Quieter, and in some cases, more painful. (Ouch.) Onstage antics just kicked ass, at least from where I was standing. Well - time to wash my costume again (it takes 0 chemicals, except hydrogen hydroxide, to do this).

[music |Syd Barret - Effervescing Elephant]

Recorded my character biography at MAINZ tonight. It was lovely! Lots of knobs (shaved, unfortunately) and sliders and monitors and stuff in the control room, a drum kit and bass and stuff in the studio. It was just kinda awesome to sit in front of the mic and talk to it, paying attention to vocals, you know. It was actually better, also, with Damo and Tam in the control room, because I could kind of up the performance value of it. Nice nice.

[music |PJ Harvey - We Float]

I've decided, categorically, what I'm going to talk about in the next stand-up night. It's not as exotic as Klingon culture, but it (or at least, the core idea from which I will branch) should work nicely. It shall be based around a shocking revelation that I had today. Incredible. Amazing. Paradigm-shifting. And great material. Heh heh heh...

I'm also zeroing in on a concept for my next short film - the surrealist dream-sequencey one. Actually, no, I haven't, I've just been daydreaming about it. A lot.

Rehearsal tonight: we timed it and it's looking like it'll be between 1:30 and 1:45, so my fears about exorbitant length have been allayed. The post-shooting scene with the "new 'tude" got a bit carried away. There was YUMMY YUMMY mis-iced carrot cake this time - why it was deemed so inferior is beyond me (apart from the obvious aesthetic aspect). Also gained a Loopen Experiment T-shirt, which unfortunately is too small (I asked for small based on the "small" Scriptless t-shirts being juuust right), and my costume which is unreasonably big but works for my character. The pants are really hard to figure out. Recording biographies tomorrow evening - should be great fun. And beyond that: adventures to St. Thomas's for mini-group rehearsals!

It's all exciting, and, like, stuff.

I'd...like...to be...INVOLVED... [Aug. 23rd, 2006|10:51 pm]

[music |The Coral - Skeleton Key]

OK, so my character (in Writer's)took a turn for the hallucinogenic tonight. We decided that my perception of things in the post-shooting scene, due to lack of blood (and lack of oxygen to the brain), should be kind of heightened (flying in the face of biological realism I guess, but there we go). I'm thinking like that scene in The Matrix where Neo sees the world in code. That kind of "whoa" feeling...about EVERYTHING. So the facial molestation is like "wow, every pore is like this really huge crevasse and whowowwowaowawawowowow its shiny and stuff", the blood is like "wowowowowow this is really bright red and it smells like nice" and the stranger is like "fuck man, that hair is flying around my body and swirling and stuff". This means it's edging dangerously close to "stoner humour"...but we can combat that later, probably through not smiling. I had to do it without Emma again though...gr!

We also did a lot of group work and stuff - like sorting out the start and finish of the play, choreographing the big group sequences a bit more, that kind of thing. I can't help thinking, though, that with each additional "stagey" bit Lisa adds in, the length of the play will go up and up and up. I guess we should wait til we time a proper (non-stop) run, but it just looks like it'll be quite long at the moment. Also the camping trip has been turned into the cast after-party - so it will now take place after the show's run - we'll all cram our bodies into a 4x4m marquee. Yippee!

I've been struggling with ideas for my next short film (the one I'll make for uni). We have to involve a dream sequence of some kind...but I want to do that without resorting to fucking "dream sequence" stuff. Like do something that on the surface looks totally naturalistic but it's infused with surrealism in some way. I don't know.

Dad's arriving tomorrow...exciting times ahead. Snakes, Who, Hanmer...all that stuff.
