Team: TBALC Title: New Fish Genre: Musical Eligible: Thank God!
After committing fraud, Alex finds himself the new “fish” in prison and the inmates all want a piece of his ass; in particular his homicidal cellmate.
If you’re going to do a musical – you do it like this. TBALC have delivered everything they promised they would. Great music, clever lyrics, superb song transitions, humour, acting, a slow motion fight sequence with accompanying instrumental and it all looks great as well. “The Rock” song was very cool. Little wonder you punched the air with delight when you got this genre. Strong, strong, strong contender to win Christchurch. Does it have any faults? Well, at a stretch the prison courtyard looked a bit too nice and the quantity of inmates was noticably sparse during this scene. A stretch though...

Comments: Ahhh… the dreaded musical - but not for this team. It was a perfect fit. My opinion is it is one of the most serious contenders for Christchurch winner. The only note I jotted down was “awesome”.

Dimension Films presents a Troublemaker Studios production: a film by Quentin Tarantino: Kurt Russell in Quentin Tarantino's THUNDER BOLT DEATH PROOF. Starring as "The Girls": Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, Jordan Ladd, Rose McGowan, Sydney Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Zoe Bell as herself. And Michael Parks as Earl McGraw. With cameos by Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino.
6.30pm, Friday 9th November.
Reading Cinemas, The Palms (only place it's on by the looks of it!).
Be there or be road kill. (Honestly, I've seen it, and it's the kind of movie that makes you want to stand up and scream "I love movies!" at the end. I did anyway. I freaking love it. It has moments of pure cinema that are just intoxicating. Plus, if you've watched lots of Tarantino or even PLANET TERROR, you'll see characters from those films that pop up (cops and hospital-rapist from KILL BILL for example), and you get lots and lots of references to his movies and TONS of others. The film-scratching effects are way more realistic than in PT and make the film seem more "real". The dialogue is fucking great, and delivered by an incredible cast. It has an awesome, awesome car chase sequence. The music, as you'd expect, kicks ass, as does the foot fetishism which is very prevalent even by Tarantino standards. Did I mention this movie freaking rules?) |

Play takes patrons into cesspit
Of all the Dramasoc productions I have seen over the years I think this is probably the best.
I certainly enjoyed it the most, which says a lot about the quality of the production, but also is a way of recognising Harry Gibson's superb adaptation of the classic, cult novel.
You enjoy the play, but it is a curious way to be entertained; watching a bunch of losers drinking, fornicating, vomiting and drugging their lives away. If you thought the film was bad enough, then the play takes an even deeper dive into the cesspit of human existence.
It is a raw, explicit, uncensored look at people on the margins who are consumed by addictions to sex, booze and heroin. What saves the play from tipping over into a ghastly freakshow is its immensely witty and ironic writing.
At the same time, Trainspotting has a cutting, political dimension to it. Whatever else it is about, it also exposes the failure of social democracies to keep all their citizens whole, as it lifts the lid to show the squirming underclass.
As for the production itself, it was excellent. It would be unfair to single out individuals. Let's just say that all the cast did a magnificent job of creating Welsh's sordid world and the deadbeats and weirdos that inhabit it.
They resisted the temptation to play it over the top so that they created a genuine universe that was as real as it was horrible.
The direction was clear and assured, pace was very good and all the technical elements cohered nicely together. It is a first-rate production.

I present: Park Thing. In all its soundless, 16mm, heavily encoded glory. I'll probably do some music for it at some point, but right now I'm too freakin' busy writing my next one.
Speaking of which: I need a cheesy action hero, a lead henchman (main character), a couple of anonymous henchmen to be killed, a corporate villain, and a love interest for the henchman. Shooting will be within the next three weeks, and can be at essentially any time (most of it is interior shooting). Action hero and dispatchable henchmen have to be able to do, well, action. Volunteers? |

Edit: Isn't it a nice day today! The weather is all summery and all the people are all summery...it's like it's summer, or something. And I like it!
Also: Foo's Tank is now totally finished, with the removal of an obtrusive piece of music and the addition of actually audible dialogue in one bit. |

Phew. What a night. I'm full of chocolate and the buzz of having won. Thanks to everyone involved in Chopsnilf. I love you guys, all of you. My only wish is that Abigail could've been there. But yeah - great, all things considered!
And I touched Nick Cave by association (and Thom Yorke, James Dean Bradfield, Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, Ian Curtis, Bono, and so on). Wheeeeehew. Congratulations Kate for winning the quiz, 13 out of 20 is a pretty mean feat for that quiz. Yeouch. |
