From "Mista Teas":
Team: TBALC Title: New Fish Genre: Musical Eligible: Thank God!
After committing fraud, Alex finds himself the new “fish” in prison and the inmates all want a piece of his ass; in particular his homicidal cellmate.
If you’re going to do a musical – you do it like this. TBALC have delivered everything they promised they would. Great music, clever lyrics, superb song transitions, humour, acting, a slow motion fight sequence with accompanying instrumental and it all looks great as well. “The Rock” song was very cool. Little wonder you punched the air with delight when you got this genre. Strong, strong, strong contender to win Christchurch. Does it have any faults? Well, at a stretch the prison courtyard looked a bit too nice and the quantity of inmates was noticably sparse during this scene. A stretch though...
Story (5/5) - Entertainment Value (5/5) - Adherence to Genre (5/5) - Production (5/5)
AND from "chchreview":
Team: TBALC Title: New Fish Genre: Musical/Dance
Comments: Ahhh… the dreaded musical - but not for this team. It was a perfect fit. My opinion is it is one of the most serious contenders for Christchurch winner. The only note I jotted down was “awesome”.
Ratings: 8.8/10
then "SuspectTV" says:
TBALC hit it right out of the park this year, certainly the team to beat. |

Genre: Musical or Dance Character: Alex Puddle, an exaggerator Prop: a rock Line: "It doesn't fit"
We made a pretty kickass prison musical called "New Fish". It's probably TBALC's funniest and best-produced film yet. Great collaborative effort (more so than any film previously), with everyone bringing something cool to the table. It's got some sound issues, but there are some magic moments that totally steal the show - it's ball-bustingly entertaining.
Our use of the prop is a bit obvious, but yields the finest comedy moment in the film.
I love 48HOURS so much. |

I'm sitting here at Base Camp (aka The Red Room) and contemplating the next couple of days' filmmaking awesomeness and pain.
This year TBALC has the best gear we've ever had (including two brand-new HD cameras, many lights, sound gear, strobes, smoke machines, lots of grip equipment, and an outrageous array of gel colours), the best core team we've ever had (with new additions Mssrs Clark and Koorey), the best potential cast we've ever had, and a wide array of potential locations. We're shooting in High Definition for the first time. We have a company logo. We, seemingly, have it all.
The day has been pretty chilled - getting the gear sorted, and so on. Got a decent but not huge amount of sleep last night. This year I will have sleeping bag and extra clothes, towel etc at Base Camp so can stay the night more comfortably. And...yeah. Kickass.
I can't foresee what could happen. Apparently the genres this year are particularly difficult. I say "bring it on!", for obscure genres are my bread and butter. TBALC will rise to the challenge, regardless.

We got in with 11 minutes to spare. Our film, Übermensch, is awesome. I'm intensely proud of it.
Come see it Wednesday, 7.40pm, at Reading Cinemas.
Do it. |

So tonight we begin the 2008 48HOURS marathon of pain, filmmaking, and joy.
I feel as though we are ready. I'm going to get some gear this afternoon, charge it, test it, and so on - then it's all on. I think one of the best things we've got going for us is that we're really film-literate. That should help us with genre-adhesion, at least. Hopefully this year our tech is better than last year. I don't know. We also have an awesome cast at our disposal thanks to Othello.
So yeah. I've started throwing together a rough kind of bash-cut for my documentary, which hopefully I will have in some state of half-completion for when I go to film school today (which I bunked yesterday to be sick).
Yes, I'm a bit sick at the moment - just a nasty cold really - but it couldn't be timed more poorly, really. |

We're in the motherfucking finals! This means that something I shot is gonna be played on a reasonably big-ass screen at READING.
Congrats also to The Orange and The Outwits...and the other finalists. |

| We had plastication problems from day one |
[May. 20th, 2007|10:37 pm] |
48 Hours was this weekend. I was DOP and editor on my team's film. We got it in with 20 minutes to go.
( The full story lies behind the cut )
I like movie. Also best weekend ever. Omg. Yes yes. yes. yesys. Shame about the priest.
Lessons: 1. Plastication is the best word ever. 2. Dont move lights when they're on. 3. Sleep is underrated. 4. V is fun to consume! 5. International drinking rules operate on pies. 6. Handlebar moustaches are teh awesome. 7. The last hour was longer than the previous 47 put together. 8. Being up for a long time = gas. 9. Check with your director before missing rehearsals. 10. Making a movie with people over a 48 hour period is THE best bonding experience ever.
WOOO heat on Thursday Friday. What a dickwad. |
